There are two Novgorods in Russia Velikiy Novgorod and Nizhniy Novgorod. Today we are speaking about Velikiy Novgorod.

Velikiy Novgorod is the one of the oldest Russian city. First time Novgorod was mentioned in 859. In 2009 was 1150 Novgorod anniversary. History of Novgorod is very exicited and dramatic. In a past it was the biggest city in ancient Russia. It was a capital of Novgorod republic wich had very close trade relationship with Europe. Later it was defeated by Ivan Grozniy. Novadays it is small town but very famous place for travel because of dozens of ancient buildings. Let's walk around city.

 During WWII Novgorod was occupied by German army. Battle was very hard. Because of that Novgorod becamy a city of military glory. It is the sign devoted to this event.

Sofiyskaya square and city government building.

There is a Novgorod Kremlin behind Sofiyskaya sqare. Kremlin was build in 1045 and was made from wood. Kremlin we could see today was build in 1490.

Main gate to the Kremlin. Before WWII here was a vehicle  road and it was a bridge at the opposite side of Kremlin. Today it is walking area.

Saint Sofia Cathedral. The oldest ortodox cathedral in Russia was build in 1045.

This is Russia Millenium monument. It created in 1862 and devoted to 1000 years of Russia national identity. It one of the most amazing monuments I saw in my life. All persons who took a part in Russian history, art and sceince shown on this monument.

Andrew Stratilat church. 1577-1589. In Greece language Stratilat means warlord. Andrew Stratilat is saint warrior-confessor. He was warlord in Roman Empire and faith helped him to defeat Persian army.

The cross close to Vladimir tower shows place where was Saint Vladimir church (1311). In 18th century this church was disassembled because of decay.

The Hall of the Facets. 15th century. One of the oldest civil building in Russia. Build in gothic style.

Likhudov building. It named after brothers Ioanniky and Sofrony Likhud who was a tutors at slavic-greece school placed in this building. 17th century.

Saint Sofia Cathedral. Just to remind - this is the oldest ortodox cathedral in Russia. It is almost 1000 years old. Was build in 1045-1050.

 Velikiy Novgorod is amazing place. Thousands of tourists visit it every year. If you want to see the oldest Russian architecture you have to visit it.
